In this video you will learn exactly what cultural appropriation is & why you shouldn’t do it. I’ll even answer if wearing dreads, dreadlocks or cornrows as a non Black person is ever okay.
Furthermore there is also some confusion on exactly what is acceptable in terms of experiencing different cultures.
“Is it cultural appropriation if I wear a Kimono, put my hair in braids, cornrows, dreads or eat a Taco?”
The short answer is probably not. But in any case you definitely need to watch this video in order to be better educated on this topic.
No matter what you’ve heard on the internet cultural appropriation is NEVER okay. There is no right or politically sensitive way to practice cultural appropriation. That’s like saying there’s a right way to steal from someone. I mean, you might get away with stealing from someone, if that’s what they mean by “a right way”. However, it’s still wrong.
According to wikipedia Cutural appropriation is:
is the adoption of an element or elements of one culture by members of another culture. This can be controversial when members of a dominant culture appropriate from disadvantaged minority cultures.
According to critics of the practice, cultural appropriation differs from acculturation, assimilation, or equal cultural exchange in that this appropriation is a form of colonialism. When cultural elements are copied from a minority culture by members of a dominant culture, these elements are used outside of their original cultural context, sometimes even against the expressly stated wishes of members of the originating culture.
Now I don’t know about you guys but that explanation seems long winded & doesn’t really tell me enough. Besides who uses wikipedia anyway? lol. That’s why I made this video, to explain in plain english exactly what cultural appropriation is. So I’m here to break things down for you.
Cultural appropriation is when you steal another group’s culture & try to pass it off as your own. Just like plagiarism. For example, music, art, hairstyles, clothing & food.
There’s a difference between cultural assimilation & appropriation.
However, after you’ve watched this video you will have a much better understanding. So leave a comment below with your thoughts & experiences on cultural appropriation.
To be honest what culture does Becky truly have?
Lmao nothing but ugly clothes that look like a freakin table cloth😂
Omg 🙄, I hate when white people Fu**ing say that and try and say that as a defense whenever someone calls them out on their bs when they got box braids or cornrows on!, I have been seeing a lot of that on tik tok lately where white culture vultures use that defense🤦🏾♂️ They Are dumb AF cuz there are So many black people with naturally Blonde hair(Austro-nesians , Melanesians, Aborigines) like people that say that kind of stupid ass sH!t are uneducated and dumb and slow as hell! Also Straight hair isn’t exclusive to white people at all, there are so many people that are non white people (Mongolid and non White Caucasoids, and Austroloids who have naturally straight hair and there are so many Black people around the world who have naturally straight hair!! So that defense don’t work..ugh these white people piss me off😒 they can’t just let black people get credit for anything !!
Great point
That was an excellent clarification. I feel like I went to school.
As long as I can remember, my sisters and I, like many black women, switched up our styles. We as black women, can wear any style and look absolutely amazing wearing it. The only times I have noticed white women changing their hair, either changing the color, getting a haircut, or both. becky’s are now trying to switch up their hair because they are following behind our footsteps. Because they have no originality or creativity. It’s easier to copy others. These “intellectual giants” seem to think that a texture and color of hair that grows out of one’s scalp, can be appropriated. When the actuality and reality is just assimilation. The only culture these white people have are the ones they stole..
Thank you so much for this insightful video. The explanation was simple enough for everyone and anyone to understand. Much love to you and keep up the outstanding work. Keep the African flag flying high.
F.Y.I.
White women do wear weaves.
I have watched white women get infusion weaves which cost at least $1300.00.
I wear my hair natural, tex-laxed, or relaxed. Only I make the choice. It is entirely my own decision.
Healthy, clean, well groomed (and trims) conditioned, hydrated and moisturized hair is the key. Along with diet and lifestyle.
Good luck Ladies 🤎🖤🤎
