In this video you will learn exactly what cultural appropriation is & why you shouldn’t do it. I’ll even answer if wearing dreads, dreadlocks or cornrows as a non Black person is ever okay.
Furthermore there is also some confusion on exactly what is acceptable in terms of experiencing different cultures.
“Is it cultural appropriation if I wear a Kimono, put my hair in braids, cornrows, dreads or eat a Taco?”
The short answer is probably not. But in any case you definitely need to watch this video in order to be better educated on this topic.
No matter what you’ve heard on the internet cultural appropriation is NEVER okay. There is no right or politically sensitive way to practice cultural appropriation. That’s like saying there’s a right way to steal from someone. I mean, you might get away with stealing from someone, if that’s what they mean by “a right way”. However, it’s still wrong.
According to wikipedia Cutural appropriation is:
is the adoption of an element or elements of one culture by members of another culture. This can be controversial when members of a dominant culture appropriate from disadvantaged minority cultures.
According to critics of the practice, cultural appropriation differs from acculturation, assimilation, or equal cultural exchange in that this appropriation is a form of colonialism. When cultural elements are copied from a minority culture by members of a dominant culture, these elements are used outside of their original cultural context, sometimes even against the expressly stated wishes of members of the originating culture.
Now I don’t know about you guys but that explanation seems long winded & doesn’t really tell me enough. Besides who uses wikipedia anyway? lol. That’s why I made this video, to explain in plain english exactly what cultural appropriation is. So I’m here to break things down for you.
Cultural appropriation is when you steal another group’s culture & try to pass it off as your own. Just like plagiarism. For example, music, art, hairstyles, clothing & food.
There’s a difference between cultural assimilation & appropriation.
However, after you’ve watched this video you will have a much better understanding. So leave a comment below with your thoughts & experiences on cultural appropriation.
She was absolutely disingenuous the entire time. She basically wants to avoid accountability and silence the opposing argument. She said to not be dismissive of her argument but she is doing exactly that. She is the one taking all of the talking points on why cultural appropriation is harmful and just going “yeah whatever, but white people don’t see it as a problem.” Literally. And I bet this is how she responded in the her comment section, just shutting down anybody who disagrees with a lengthy explanation of “I really don’t care, leave me and white people alone, slavery is over”
Great video Angel. That asian woman was ridiculous 🙄. Smh. Keep spreading the truth because it’s so many lies out there .
Back in the late 70’s Bo Derrick was in a movie called “10”. She got so much white people praise for wearing braids in African American fashion.
Yet Black Americans were not allowed wear braids to work in corporate businesses.
“This is called a long knife and silky pjs fresh from Brooklyn”
