In this video you will learn exactly what cultural appropriation is & why you shouldn’t do it. I’ll even answer if wearing dreads, dreadlocks or cornrows as a non Black person is ever okay.
Furthermore there is also some confusion on exactly what is acceptable in terms of experiencing different cultures.
“Is it cultural appropriation if I wear a Kimono, put my hair in braids, cornrows, dreads or eat a Taco?”
The short answer is probably not. But in any case you definitely need to watch this video in order to be better educated on this topic.
No matter what you’ve heard on the internet cultural appropriation is NEVER okay. There is no right or politically sensitive way to practice cultural appropriation. That’s like saying there’s a right way to steal from someone. I mean, you might get away with stealing from someone, if that’s what they mean by “a right way”. However, it’s still wrong.
According to wikipedia Cutural appropriation is:
is the adoption of an element or elements of one culture by members of another culture. This can be controversial when members of a dominant culture appropriate from disadvantaged minority cultures.
According to critics of the practice, cultural appropriation differs from acculturation, assimilation, or equal cultural exchange in that this appropriation is a form of colonialism. When cultural elements are copied from a minority culture by members of a dominant culture, these elements are used outside of their original cultural context, sometimes even against the expressly stated wishes of members of the originating culture.
Now I don’t know about you guys but that explanation seems long winded & doesn’t really tell me enough. Besides who uses wikipedia anyway? lol. That’s why I made this video, to explain in plain english exactly what cultural appropriation is. So I’m here to break things down for you.
Cultural appropriation is when you steal another group’s culture & try to pass it off as your own. Just like plagiarism. For example, music, art, hairstyles, clothing & food.
There’s a difference between cultural assimilation & appropriation.
However, after you’ve watched this video you will have a much better understanding. So leave a comment below with your thoughts & experiences on cultural appropriation.
Well this video definitely cleared some things about cultural appropriation for me at least
I do have a problem with other races wearing our hairstyles those hairstyles are for us from our ancestors passed down from generation to generation.
Yea but it’s like u got men out here calling it ghetto in one race and beautiful on another I also don’t have a problem but I feel like if their gonna call us ghetto for wearing braids then they shouldn’t wear it period why would they want to be associated with something “ghetto”
The reason most white girls would wear our hair styles is because they are jealous of how beautiful it is, that is also why they won’t give us credit because they want all the praise and attention. Non black people have to realize that our culture is not a store, black culture is sacred to us.
African braided hairstyles are so beautiful and complements the many skin tones , hair textures, and facial features within the African diaspora. I am offended when these non-black women with their struggle strands wear our hairstyles and more than likely, they will never give any type of credit to where styles originated. The best examples of non-black women giving no credit when wearing black hairstyles are the Jenners and Kardashians. Whenever they are called out, their mouths are glued shut. We all know that these types of women are jealous and insecure when it comes to a black woman’s beauty.
OMG angel I cant believe that Facebook took down your post 🙄 and you spoke facts 💯💯🗣 thank you angel 🙏🏾
Great video as always King, you took a very objective look at how appropriation spans all cultures. The problem is, as you pointed out, we get punished for it. I’ve been natural for almost 20 years (I’m 39) and have had locks since 2007, and I STILL get the strangest looks for how my Goddess roots escape from my crown. 😒. But at a Marc Jacob’s fashion show, it’s “trendy” to have a “dreadlock” parade with zero flavor. 🤦🏾♀️
