Fifteen years ago, the very first non-Black Latino activists used to focus on the ORIGINAL AFRO-LATINOS, understand Caribbean, Central and South Americans who ACTUALLY looked like the REAL Afro-Latinos, hence people who seemed to have just arrived from the Kongo or/and West Africa. They had little to no admixture and were the Palenqueros, the Garifunas etc. Though still present, you move forward, 15 years later, and the Afro-Latin fight has now become mainstream. If I say mainstream then=whitewashed. We all know that the Latin media market is being controlled by WHITE CRIOLLOS with no attach to the continent and who will always promote populations which favor a white heritage. For this reason, in a matter of 15 years, the original Afro-Latinos have become MIXED BLACK LATINOS so as to support the false Spanish narrative which claims that everybody is “mixed” in the region, hence another way 2 downplay the genocide. Therefore, if the mixed Black Latinos are now the new faces of Afrolatinidad then why can’t Veronica Vega also claim to be AFRO-LATINA. She has a Black great-grandma, probably practices santeria and grew up in a Black Caribbean culture. Amara La Negra may be dark but she is already MIXED and does not look like the PURE BLACK LATINOS the media wanna hide. If you promote mixed Black Latinos as pure Black Latinos then don’t be mad and surprised if Veronica Vega come into the shit too. LOL Unless you gate keep and fight to protect the ORIGINAL ONES. That’s it.
